When I start designing a piece, I always keep a few things in mind.  

I want each piece to change with the day depending on the light and viewing angle. Each of my metal wall sculpture pieces has a unique texture applied to the metal.

Texture is the most important aspect of my work-it's what keeps me coming back and creating new unique pieces.  Metal (steel in particular) has a unique ability to convey texture whether it be behind a translucent color or by itself in a raw grind pattern.  The result is something that is constantly changing - it's dynamic just like we humans.  I love that aspect of metal wall art creation!

This hand applied texture gives the piece uniqueness. It's very similar to the idea that no two people have the same fingerprint. I hand apply the textures - I could not make a reproduction of it if I wanted to (but I don't want to - I love originality).

My Metal Wall Art should by dynamic and change when the viewing angle changes. Whenever I add texture to the metal, it gives the illusion that the piece is somewhat 3 dimensional - like you could actually reach into it and feel around.

It's not always easy, but I really try to let my imagination go when I start building a piece.  The "happy accident" is my friend.  In fact, I have to say that a number of my favorite pieces came to realization that way.  That's why I try to keep perfectionism at bay when I'm in the shop just so I don't squash one of those pivotal moments when something amazing emerges.

I trust the creative process to bring my perceptions and experiences into reality.  It's not always easy, but we must each find ways to express ourselves outside of the "normal" goings on.  It's easy to get trapped into thinking that we are our thoughts, but, alas, we are so much more.  My metal wall art lets met get out of my head and into the current that underlies all this stuff we call reality.

FAQ'S

Can I put your metal wall art outside?

I offer the option of having a baked on clear coat applied (called powder coating) which will protect my wall art from the elements. It's the same process used to keep commercial railings, school playground equipment, and many other outdoor steel sculptures safe. It is literally a "baked on" clear coat that is very, very resilient. Needless to say, your piece will last many, many years in harsh conditions (although I wouldn't recommend you burying it the snowbank or something similar).

Will the Colors Fade?

All my colors are UV resistant so fading is not an issue.

Why do you use Steel instead of Aluminum?

I have used both mediums (steel and aluminum). I find that steel works best for me because it has richer "tones" when ground. Aluminum has a finish that doesn't quite capture the texture that I am searching for. So far, steel has proven to be the blank canvas of choice for me.

Some of My Philosophy

There are some fantastic metal artists out there and there have been many before us. Many state that they invented "grinding aluminum panels" or they invented a certain grind pattern. The fact is, hundreds and thousands of metal workers out there have used those grind patterns/styles-we all have and we all do. Look around and you'll see art work that dates way back using the same styles. In the end, you need to find a piece of art work that speaks to you!
